HISTORY
Being an ancient building which is mentioned in the York Archives as far back as 1503, the Golden Fleece stands directly opposite York's most historic and picturesque street, the shambles.
The rear yard is named after Lady Alice Peckett whose husband, John, owned the premises as well as being Lord Mayor of York around 1702.
PARANORMAL HISTORY
The Golden Fleece is York's Most Haunted pub, thus one of the England's most haunted sites. The Golden Fleece is well known for its Ghosts.
Many guests have reported seeing the late Lady Peckett wandering the endless corridors and staircases in the wee, small hours and, including ghostly apparitions and moving furniture, hers is just one of the five resident spirits.
Sightings of a ghostly little girl who appears and disappears whilst standing in the kitchen have been seen many times. There have been a number of accounts where people have felt a tightening around their throat and having their hair pulled by invisible hands. Scrreams have been heard and people have felt terrified for no reason.
In addition to what has already been described there have been other disturbing accounts of doors banging, footsteps being heard on the stairs. Cold spots have been felt in different areas on different occasions. There have been extreme temperature changes and candles that relight themselves. Beds have moved on their own and strange lights have been seen.
INVESTIGATION
We entered the main part of the caves and switched off the lights. It was so dark we couldn't see our hands in front our faces. We started to call out and ask for signs that we were not alone. After about 30 minutes of silence we started to hear stones being thrown nearby, on demand. This continued for some time until a stone hit the wall directly behind me just missing my head. No stone could be found later after the lights had been switched back on.
